Activities at Alonissos
Exciting activities, things to do and see during your holidays at Alonissos island.
National Marine Park
Various species of fish, birds and mammals, among which the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus-Monachus, which is unfortunately an endangered, protected species), have sought shelter at the National Marine Park.
The biological station, in charge of the well being of the Monachus-Monachus is located at Gerakas, at the north part of the island.
Island & Surroundings Tour
On your way out of Patitiri along the southeastern side of the island you will reach Votsi, the small fishing village and the second most popular tourist spot on the island, with crystal blue waters, nice taverns by the seashore and with a very nice view over the bay.
After Votsi you will reach another traditional fishing village, Steni Vala. If you are lucky enough, you may get to see the friendly seals. Many traditional taverns serving well known dishes, such as lobster pasta and fish soup, can be found along the seashore of the small beach.
The neighbouring island of Peristera with its small sandy beaches is located right across. The south part of the island has witnessed an ancient ship wreck, currently under the supervision of the National Archaeological Service. The road will lead you, through small beaches and shores, to another fishing area, Kalamakia. After this nice area with the family taverns you will reach the Agios Dimitrios beach, a long pebbly beach.
The port of Alonissos
The island’s main port, Patitiri, welcomes ferries as well as many small fishing boats owned by the local fishermen (who at a small cost will be happy to transfer you to nearby beaches) and yachts. There is also a sandy beach with clean water at the left side of the port.
The visitor will find many taverns and cafés along that beach, where the pine trees cast their shadow. Patitiri is a small port with 2 parallel streets with shops, restaurants and flowers everywhere, especially bougainvilleas. The interesting Museum is on top of the hill over the port.
The Old Town, the island’s capital up until 1965, is located at the top end of the island over Patitiri. Narrow streets, traditional houses, small yards, old traditional churches will attract the visitor who will admire the island’s view from the unique windmill at the top of Alonissos capital.
Where to go, what to do
The tourist can take a small boat and visit various islands, such as:
KIRA-PANAGIA, which is well known for its two nice bays and the famous restored monastery. Gioura is a rocky island, where wild goats graze. Sea caves, such as the famous Cyclopes cave at the west part of the island (mentioned by Homer in the Odyssey), await the visitor.
PSATHOURA is a small, flat island where there is an ancient sunk city. French engineers built a lighthouse at the north part back in 1895.
PIPERI is a small island where the largest number of seals lives. It is the central point of the supervised and protected Marine Park. Access is strictly forbidden and is restricted to a distance of 3 miles from the central point. This is how the most important part of the seals habitat is protected. 33 bird species live on Piperi.
SKANTZOURA is a small, flat island with low hills and a white marble quarry. A ruined monastery, belonging to the Agia Lavra Monastery of the Agio Oros, is located at the centre of the island.
Sports, Recreation & Healing
If swimming & sunbathing is not enough for you, you should know that Alonissos offers great opportunities for walking and mountain biking. Its pine tree forests will provide the necessary shade and cool atmosphere even during the hottest summer days.
Other sports and recreational activities offered at Alonissos are:
diving, kayaking, yoga and tennis.
Let us not forget that at Alonissos island you will find the International Academy of Classical Homeopathy (IACH), with students from all over the world attending its classes of Homeopathy.
Alonissos during the evening
The island is not what you would call a “party island”. It is suitable for people who wish to relax and enjoy a quiet holiday.
Nonetheless, there is no shortage in bars of various styles. No clubbing at Alonissos. Only beautifully decorated bars with nice music that will allow you to discuss with your friends while enjoying your drink.
